2014 VW Golf 7 R Testing at Nurburgring [Video]

U-shaped headlight graphics, five doors and heavy camouflage: whatever could it be? It’s the a test prototype for the Golf 7 R which VW engineers are testing at the famous Nurburgring track in Germany.

Taking things one step above the Mk7 GTI, this hot hatch has a little bit of the old and a little bit of the new. Under its bonnet is a new version of the 2.0-liter TSI engine, believed to produce somewhere around 290 hp. That might not sound mind-blowing, but the new Golf has taught us that lightness and more torque makes a car faster.

Volkswagen builds a Golf with 503 horsepower

This VW Golf has the power and four-wheel-drive hardware to take the fight to its corporate cousins over at Lamborghini. Does the world really need a German hatchback with more than 500 horsepower? Thankfully, VW didn’t listen to reason when it came to engineering the insane Design Vision GTI.

This one is for the fans – specifically fanatics of the VW GTI. Volkswagen has created an outrageously potent version of the seventh-generation GTI hatchback, as part of a weekend’s celebration of all things GTI-related.

Volkswagen Roadster Still Under Consideration

People that were there for the past Detroit Auto Show were treated to a rare breed. It was the Volkswagen BlueSport concept (See image above). This beauty had everyone talking and excited about when a production version would be made, but Volkswagen could not confirm that, or even if it would ever make an appearance. However, it looks as if this sporty little roadster just might come into being after all, although that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

What we do know is that the automaker’s design chief, Walter de Silva, said. He commented, “I’m not the only one in our company who is convinced that a small roadster wouldn’t be the worst thing for Volkswagen. This is a vehicle that we particularly like, and we always have in mind.”

2015 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback

Manufacturers do this once in a while. They roll out a new model at an auto show, tell us how great it is and then wait until the end to mention that it won’t be in dealers for another year or so.

Such is the case with the 2015 Volkswagen GTI and the reason is simple. While European GTIs are built in Germany, U.S. models will hail from Puebla, Mexico, and before it can build the car, Volkswagen has to finish building the plant.

Citing future fuel efficiency legislation as the reason why, VW claims to have begun work on a new 10-speed dual-clutch transmission.

It was previously rumored that such a transmission was possible but VW Group head Martin Winterkorn confirmed his company is developing one while speaking at the Vienna Motor Symposium, citing upcoming C02 emissions legislation as the reason.

Cane Wrapped VW Pickup

We’ve seen a lot of money spent on cars wrapped in velvet and even coins the past few weeks. Today we take a look at a poorer approach on this mater.

A Nigerian named Ojo Obaniyi, used an abundant material from his homeland, the raffia palm cane, to wrap the Volkswagen pickup that he owns. Unlike modern wraps, he somehow took it to a whole new level. Apart from the dashboard instrumentation, the radio and some buttons and trimmings, the whole car is wrapped in braided palm cane. The exterior features a dark brown finished weave and for the interior, a lighter braiding was used.
