Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept is a junior CC

Meet the Volkswagen New Midsize Coupe concept, or the NMC in short, which has just made its world debut at Auto China 2014 in Beijing. In essence, it previews a coupe-like sedan positioned between the Jetta and Passat models. A junior CC, if you like.

At 4,597 mm long and 1,838 mm wide, the NMC is shorter than the C-segment Jetta, yet wider than the D-segment Passat. Its 1,422 mm height is lower than both the standard sedans too, giving it a low visual centre of gravity.

The NMC sits on Volkswagen Group’s modular MQB platform. It introduces the VW design boss, Klaus Bischoff’s new vision of front end design, with a complex grille, 3D-effect LED headlights and a large but closely detailed lower air intake. The show wheels are huge 22-inchers with body matching ‘Dragon Red’ highlights.

Volkswagen Touareg facelift brings fresh looks, new technology

The updated Volkswagen Touareg will show off its refreshed styling and new technology when it debuts in Beijing this weekend.

Bi-xenon headlights feature as standard inside the Touareg’s reshaped headlamp clusters, which now connect from top to bottom with the edges of the new four-slat radiator grille.

The front bumper has also been reworked with deeper creases and more angular lower central and side intakes. A revised lower bumper section housing reshaped fog lights and an underbody protector panel sits beneath a new optional thin silver trim strip, which continues along the base of the doors and around to the rear bumper.

VW Phaeton returning to America as early as 2018

Though the Volkswagen Phaeton — the brand’s range-topping, understated luxury sedan — disappeared from the United States market in 2006, never actually died. The tech-laden luxobarge is still offered overseas, and it has seen a number of revisions and updates since it was last offered here.

Of course, much more has changed since 2006 than the Phaeton’s front fascia. VW has been on a world auto-market domination kick, we’ve endured a recession that precluded previous attempts to reintroduce the Phaeton to North America and company brass seem to have forgotten the ridicule the poor car was subjected to when it was on sale here.

First Test: 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4Motion Euro Spec

Let me lay some facts on you: The Volkswagen Tiguan is an important part of the automaker’s plans for the American market. Clean-burning diesel engines are also very important to Volkswagen. Given those two facts, you would think VW would offer a diesel version of the Tiguan compact crossover here in the U.S. Oddly enough, it doesn’t. But because almost 25 percent of new VWs are sold with an oil-burning TDI engine, Volkswagen is starting to come around to the idea of offering a diesel Tiguan. So to see just how well a diesel compact CUV would fit in in the American marketplace, VW sent us a nearly loaded Euro Spec 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan TDI 4Motion to test.

All-new Volkswagen Passat nears public debut

New Passat will be mechanically similar to the Golf and will spawn a hybrid version

The all-new Volkswagen Passat is close to its public debut, as these latest spy shots show. Based on the largest version of the MQB platform, the Passat is one of VW’s most important models. In 2013 the Passat family was the fifth best-selling VW brand model globally, shifting 651,027 units, down from 705,784 in 2012.

The mechanical make-up of the new Passat will closely mirror that of the current Golf, with a range of downsized turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, the option of all-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

VW’s tribute to the Kombi van

In September 2013, the last ever Kombi bus sputtered out of the São Bernardo do Campo plant in Brazil. Which moved Volkswagen to make a a film.

And while Type 2s have the longevity of a beer can, but with far less enjoyable contents, they’re irrefutably iconic things. Which is why VW paid tribute with this auto-eulogy, documenting a small sample of owners from the car’s staggering 3.9 million-unit production run.

VW Scirocco on Bentley Wheels Is a Show Stopper

Bentley wheels on Volkswagens and Audi – yeah, that’s a real thing in Germany, where the tuning industry comes up with more creative projects than probably anywhere else in Europe. This one is the most interesting one we’ve seen in a while, so we though we’d bring it to your attention even though the photos are not as crisp as we’d like them to be. A company called Folienking is responsible for this project, which is not actually a Scirocco R.

The very expensive wheels come last, only after the front, rear, sides and even the rear lights were changed. The exhaust is also brand new, featuring a custom cat-back developed by HG-Motorsport. But wait, there’s more!

Volkswagen announces paw-wheel-drive program, teaches rescue dogs to drive

Volkswagen has teamed up with RSPCA to create the paw-wheel-drive program which helps rescue dogs learn how to drive a car.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles collaborated with UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals charity to teach three mixed-breed dogs to drive the 4WD 180 HP Amarok. The training process took part at RSPCA’s center in Hertfordshire where the animals perfected their driving skills with help from a human instructor with access to dual controls.

VW Golf TDI SportWagen concept is a taste of delicious things to come

Feast your eyes on the new longroof model of the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf – something we’ve already seen with Variant badging overseas. This concept (yes, it really is a concept) previews the next Golf SportWagen that will go on sale in the US in early 2015, and makes its official debut next week at the 2014 New York Auto Show.

Why the concept designation? The car you see here uses a TDI clean-diesel engine and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive. Oh sure, when the car comes to market next year, it’ll be offered with both 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines – the former mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, the latter using a six-speed DSG dual clutch or six-speed manual – but as for all-wheel drive, well… that might not make the cut. A Volkswagen spokesperson told Autoblog that 4Motion is “under consideration” for the production model that’ll go on sale next year, but as of this writing, the company is only planning to offer a front-drive SportWagen in our market.
