VW’s Beastly Pickups Conquer 10K Miles of Snow to Get to Olympics

Volkswagen has rolled into Sochi with a trio of highly modified and incredibly badass pickups, and on the way there, the team set a world record for the longest off-road trek through a single country.

To promote the Winter Olympics in more rural areas of Russia — some two-thirds of the gigantic country — VW built three Polar Expedition versions of its Amarok pickup. The outrageous trucks set the new Guinness World Record by traveling some 16,000 kilometers (9,942 miles) over 60 days between the Russian capital of Moscow and the Bering Sea city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky — one of the largest “cities” in the world without a road leading to it.

Volkswagen is Making a 370 hp Golf R Evo

We’re pumped for the new VW Golf R. It’s powered by a turbo charged I4 that makes 290 hp, much like a WRX STI; it’s AWD like the WRX; it’s very blue, like the WRX; and it’s a hatchback, like the WRX should be. Given that this will, no doubt, have a nicer interior than the Subaru as well, we’re excited.

Volkswagen T-Roc pictures and eyes-on:

The open-top SUV concept

Now here’s a concept: an open-top SUV. And at the Geneva Motor Show that’s exactly what Volkswagen had to show in the shape of the VW T-Roc. It’s a crossover car concept that almost out-Jeeps Jeep.

Despite what “convertible SUV” might conjure in the mind the T-Roc somehow manages to look totally cool. But then the three door version shown off doesn’t have the size and scale typical of many sports utility vehicles. So perhaps that’s exactly why it works in a visual form.

Volkswagen Finally Confirms Three-Row SUV Coming in 2016

Volkswagen has ambitious growth plans for the future, and one of the most important models for boosting the company’s sales in the U.S. is the long-rumored three-row midsize SUV based on the CrossBlue Concept from last year’s Detroit auto show. The rumors are now over, as Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn officially confirmed that this SUV for the U.S. is “on its way” for a launch date of 2016 at a dinner ahead of the 2014 Detroit auto show.

This SUV, which does not have a name as of yet, will compete with successful crossovers like the Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder. This model could provide a big boost for Volkswagen sales if it can make inroads in this popular segment. Winterkorn reiterated the plan to sell one million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles in the U.S. by 2018, an ambitious goal but not an impossible one considering that the company sold 600,000 cars in 2013, nearly doubling its U.S. sales numbers from a few years ago.

First Look: Volkswagen Beetle Dune Concept

A Beetle Turbo, now dressed for the desert.

Dune buggies meant freedom and rebellion all at the same time. Based around the evergreen Volkswagen Beetle, builders stripped away the bodies, added some fiberglass and big tires, and created an instant California-style classic.

Now Volkswagen is going back to the well, promising more freedom, but a lot less rebellion with its Volkswagen Beetle Dune.

Pitched as an off-road version of the Golf-based Beetle, the Beetle Dune concept car is a near-production design that will give the two-model Beetle range a crossover niche-filler.
